Be yourself all the time
Sometimes it's surprisingly difficult to just be yourself. Certain people seem
to naturally be them self all the time, while others struggle with this
constantly. You can learn how to be yourself, though. All you have to do is put
forth a little effort in the right areas. In this guide I will give you some
advice about how to be yourself.
Step 1: Focus on your own, personal likes and dislikes. Know
what you like and don't like are paramount to being yourself. If you want to be
yourself, you need to know what makes you "YOU." A person's own
unique style of taste is one of the things that defines them most.
Think about the music you like, the clothes you like, the movies
you like, the foods you like, etc, etc... Be confident about what you like and
don't like. Try to recognize if you only like something because someone else
likes it. The goal here is to be yourself, not someone else. If you just like
what others like, you're not being yourself.
Step 2: Express your likes and dislikes. Now that you've
discovered what you think is good and what you think is bad, have an opinion
about it. Don't be afraid to tell someone you don't like something. Similarly,
don't be afraid to tell others what you do like, or even suggest something to a
person based on your opinion of it.
Step 3: Take pride in your appearance and do things to make yourself
look good. Often times, when a person can't be them self, it's because they're
not confident in their appearance. They try to dress like others, or change
their hair or other parts of their body to look more like someone else. Get
creative with your own appearance. This basically goes back to the first step
and knowing your own likes and dislikes. Wear the clothes YOU like. Wear your
hair and makeup the way YOU like to. You know how you like to look, so stand by
that.
Once you get through these first three steps, you'll find it much
easier to be yourself. You'll also probably start discovering new ways that
will help you learn how to be yourself. This process can take time, so don't
try to rush it or expect immediate results.
I must add, though, that I think there are some people who just
can't stop copying others. Maybe copying others is just who they are. If you
really think you might be one of these people, maybe you should consider a
career in acting; or, maybe you should consider seeing a psychologist.
Do not fret, however. As long as you can form an opinion about
something, then you are capable of being your own person. It's all about the
likes and dislikes. Focus on that and that makes you YOU…
